Survivors of a deadly attack described chemical bombs being dropped from planes.

A chemical attack on a rebel-held town in Idlib province in Syria has incited international outrage after dozens of children and adults were killed. More than 70 people, including at least 30 children and 20 women, were killed—and the toll could still rise.

The gruesome and heartbreaking photos and videos showed people dying. Some writhing, choking, gasping or foaming at the mouth—after breathing in poison that possibly contained a nerve agent or other banned chemicals, according to witnesses, doctors and rescue workers.

Ms Fadl, a 25-year-old English teacher was confronted face-to-face with the horror of it: a pick-up truck piled with the bodies of the dead, including many of her own relatives and students.

While choking in tears, Ms Fadl said: “Ammar, Aya, Mohammed, Ahmad, I love you my birds, really they were like birds. Aunt Sana, Uncle Yasser, Abdul-Kareem, please hear me.”

The US and other Western countries accused President Bashar al-Assad of being behind the attack, while Syria and its main backer Russia denied it. But only the Syrian military had the ability and the motive to carry out an aerial attack like the one that struck the rebel-held town of Khan Sheikhoun.

Contrary to what the government told media, witnesses said four rockets hit around 6:30am on Tuesday, smashing a crater in the ground, but causing minimal structural damage.

It quickly became clear this was not a conventional attack, but rather a chemical attack. The hospital that took in survivors was attacked as well. It was the ‘most difficult and most harmful’ situation Syrians have seen.
