Voters in Tasek Gelugor are now asking Shabudin to quit.

Tasek Gelugor Member of Parliament Datuk Shabudin Yahya is now under fire after making an absurd remark regarding rape and child marriage. According to him, rape victims would have better lives if they choose to marry their rapists instead.

He said: “Maybe he repents, or regrets. It is better to have people who regret rather than people who do not regret.

“So in this case, let us not put an assumption that the person will remain bad. (Marriage) can be an exit clause for this problem.”

In addition to that, he also claims that girls aged between 9-12 years old are “physically and spiritually” ready for marriage.

He said: “They reach puberty at the age of nine or 12 and at that time, the physical state of their body is already akin to those 18 years of age.

“For a wife who was raped, if she can marry (the rapist) she would not go through such a bleak future.

“At least she has someone who can become her husband. So, this will be a remedy to social problems.”

Voters in Tasek Gelugor constituency express disgust at their MP’s statements concerning rape and child marriage which had been picked up by the international press.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng called Tasek Gelugor MP Datuk Shabudin Yahya unfit for office over the latter’s suggestion that rapists be allowed to marry their child victims as a solution to social problems.

Lim Guan Eng said: “Penang people don’t want a monster to become their MP, we don’t want people with no compassion for rape victims to be an MP.

“We are ashamed to have an MP like this from Penang. Even though he’s not in the state government, he is a black stain for Penang.”
