The entire Texas town was clouded in fear because of the supposed incident.

18-year-old Breana Harmon Talbott came bolting inside a church, bloodied and half naked. She claimed that she had been abducted and raped behind the said church, but was able to run away. According to her, three black men wearing ski masks abducted her and took turns raping her.

She said they took her in a black SUV to a wooded area where one suspect held her down while the other two raped her.

“She was in bad shape. She was bleeding. They had to bring some sheets to cover her up and try to calm her down,” said Saul Marquez, the pastor of the local New Creation Church. “As a church, we’re here for a reason. It’s a good thing she found some refuge here.”

Earlier that day, Talbott’s fiancé had reported her missing, and her car had been found in a parking lot with “the driver door open, her phone, keys and a shoe nearby.”

When news about a white teen being gang-raped by three black men reached locals, a cloud of fear suddenly came over them. Women and young girls found it hard to go out especially at night, in fear that they might be the next victims.

“The case quickly gathered regional attention due to the severity of the alleged crime and rumours quickly begin to spin out of control through social media. Almost immediately, Talbott’s story and allegations began to unravel. Within only a day or two, detectives had doubts as to most of Talbott’s allegations,” Denison Police Chief Jay Burch said.

But when brought to the hospital for examination, doctors found no trace of sexual assault. As her story took off on social media, the police state her story began to unravel and she eventually admitted her scratches were self-inflicted. In his statement, Chief Jay Burch says that they believed Talbott was lying very soon into the investigation but held back an announcement until they had “100% confirmation.”

Her former fiancé, Sam Hollingsworth, does not appear to have been involved with Talbott’s hoax, telling the paper that he ended the relationship. “I was hurt knowing that someone who I thought I could trust and I was wanting to spend the rest of my life with could betray me like this,” he said.

Things began spiralling out of control as white supremacists even threatened to attack the black community in their area. It was until Talbott admitted to having fabricated the attack that the hoax was revealed.

In their statement, the police apologized to the community for the harm Talbott caused:

This alleged crime as reported by Breana Harmon Talbott made many in the community fearful there were individuals abducting women. Even though we know the story to be a hoax, there is still potential damage to the reputation of the City of Denison and the Texoma region as many may remember the reported crime but not the outcome. That is unfortunate.

Breana Harmon Talbott’s hoax was also insulting to our community and especially offensive to the African-American community due to her description of the so-called suspects in her hoax. The anger and hurts caused from such a hoax are difficult and all so unnecessary.

Talbott could face up to 180 days in jail, as well as pay a fine of up to $2,000.
